Super-sensitive seal whiskers feel fish breath.

چکیده

Plunging through gentle swell in the northern oceans in search of food, harbour seals are guided by a cryptic superpower that few fish can evade. ‘Fish produce lots of water flow that remains in the water, even after the fish has gone’, says Wolf Hanke, from the University of Rostock, Germany, and it is these swirling wakes that betray the presence of fish dinners. A hungry seal can sense the tell-tale turbulence left by a passing fish with flow-sensitive whiskers on its snout, before pursuing the hapless victim’s trail. However, seals are not limited to hunting in open water. Explaining that it was apparent from crittercam movies that the diving mammals also stalk seafloordwelling species, Hanke and his colleagues were curious to find out how seals pinpoint well-camouflaged static flatfish that would evade even the sharpest eyes. Could the predators be honing in on the gentle jet of water produced by the concealed fish’s gills with their supersensitive whiskers?

Harbor seal vibrissa morphology suppresses vortex-induced vibrations.

Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) often live in dark and turbid waters, where their mystacial vibrissae, or whiskers, play an important role in orientation. Besides detecting and discriminating objects by direct touch, harbor seals use their whiskers to analyze water movements, for example those generated by prey fish or by conspecifics. Even the weak water movements left behind by objects that hav...

Characterization of seal whisker morphology: implications for whisker-inspired flow control applications.

Seals with beaded whiskers-the majority of true seals (Phocids)-are able to trace even minute disturbance caused by prey fish in the ambient flow using only sensory input from their whiskers. The unique three-dimensional undulating morphology of seal whiskers has been associated with their capability of suppressing vortex-induced vibration and reducing drag. The exceptional hydrodynamic traits ...

Flow sensing by pinniped whiskers.

Beside their haptic function, vibrissae of harbour seals (Phocidae) and California sea lions (Otariidae) both represent highly sensitive hydrodynamic receptor systems, although their vibrissal hair shafts differ considerably in structure. To quantify the sensory performance of both hair types, isolated single whiskers were used to measure vortex shedding frequencies produced in the wake of a cy...

Seals and sea lions are what they eat, plus what? Determination of trophic discrimination factors for seven pinniped species.

RATIONALE Mixing models are a common method for quantifying the contribution of prey sources to the diet of an individual using stable isotope analysis; however, these models rely upon a known trophic discrimination factor (hereafter, TDF) that results from fractionation between prey and animal tissues. Quantifying TDFs in captive animals is ideal, because diet is controlled and the proportiona...
